YONECO joined the Malawi nation and the rest of the world in commemorating the World Population Day at Kaphatenga Primary School ground in Salima district on 11 July, 2015.
Under the theme; Vulnerable Populations in Disaster, YONECO showcased the initiatives which the organization, with support from UNFPA, used to provide support to the vulnerable groups during the tormenting January 2015 floods in
During the tour of the pavilions that were set up at the commemoration venue, the Guest of Honour – Hon Patricia Kaliati who is the Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare interacted with some of the beneficiaries of YONECO’s disaster response initiatives. The initiatives included setting up of Places of Safety for women and adolescent girls where they got sanitary facilities, adult literacy sessions, Gender Based Violence response and Prevention services among other initiatives.
To spice up the occasion, YONECO Cultural Troupe also joined other performers and artists like Nyau Masked Dancers and Salima Health Education Band. YONECO Cultural Troupe, which is used to conduct Theatre for Development (TfD) and to provide edutainment in awareness campaigns, mesmerized the audience with their singing and dancing antics.
In her remarks, the Guest of Honour stated that during emergencies; women, girls and children are mostly affected than men. She stated that women and girls face a lot of challenges and there is need to ensure that they are being safeguarded during such occurrences
The function was covered live by YONECO FM Radio Station (YFM) and it was attended by UNFPA Representative in Malawi, political as well as traditional leaders.
