Nkhande Primary School has emerged victorious in the Forest Land Restoration Quiz competition, which drew participation from 10 primary schools across Ntcheu District.

The wee-long competition, which commenced on 5 August 2025 has ended today, 9 August 2025, with an award ceremony that celebrated the top performers and their commitment to environmental conservation.

The quiz was organized under the Forest and Land Restoration Project which by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Its primary aim was to instill a strong culture of tree planting and environmental stewardship among children.
Nkhande Primary School clinched the first-place spot in the finals, and they were closely followed by Gomeza Primary School. In another round, Chikuse and Nan-lay Primary Schools secured third and fourth places, respectively. The winners were awarded various educational and sports materials, including school bags, exercise books, calculators, sports jerseys, golf shirts, T-shirts, footballs and netballs.

One of the youngest participants, 9-year-old Tryness Mahira from School Nkhande Primary School, shared her excitement after the results were announced.

“I’m happy we came first. I learned a lot about how to take care of trees and why forests are important. I want to plant more trees at home and teach my friends too,” she said, smiling.

In his remarks, YONECO’s Project Coordinator, Edwin Chulu, hailed the enthusiasm of the learners and their teachers. Chulu stated that such initiatives are key in shaping environmentally conscious young leaders.
