In a bid to boost literacy and numeracy skills among primary school learners, YONECO has launched remedial classes during the school holiday in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Kawinga, Machinga district.
The initiative targets children who are struggling with basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills. The initiative is offering the leaners a chance to catch up before the new school term begins.
The field officers for YONECO in Machinga district are facilitating the sessions, providing targeted instruction to help the learners understand the4 various key concepts. The learners also benefit from structured practice time in a supportive environment, designed to improve their academic confidence and performance.
Speaking on the intervention, the District Manager for YONECO in Machinga, Kephas Phiri, explained that many learners in rural areas fall behind due to various challenges including overcrowded classrooms, limited learning materials, and lack of one-on-one support.
“These holiday remedial classes are a of bridging the learning gaps that are there. We are focusing on the fundamentals of literacy and numeracy to make sure that no child is left behind when schools reopen,” the officer said.
Parents and guardians in the area have welcomed the initiative, noting that their children are now more engaged and showing signs of improvement in their studies.
