On 5 September, 2025 the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) awarded YONECO for its outstanding contribution as a youth-driven organization promoting sustainable development and community empowerment across the country.

The award was presented during at the national commemoration event for this year’s International Youth Day that was held in Lilongwe. The recognition celebrates YONECO’s continued efforts in supporting young people to drive change, becoming a catalyst for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) progress and community empowerment across Malawi.

According to NYCOM, YONECO was recognized as a “national catalyst for the SDGs”, owing to its work in diverse areas such as youth empowerment, gender equality, health, climate resilience, and civic engagement. The organization’s inclusive approach, strong community presence, and ability to mobilise young people to take charge of their futures were highlighted as exemplary.

In his remarks, the Executive Director of YONECO, MacBain Mkandawire, explained that the recognition affirms the organization’s belief that the youth are not just beneficiaries of development, but active drivers of it.

“We are humbled and inspired to continue working alongside young people in building a just, empowered, and sustainable Malawi,” explained Mkandawire.
