Dear Readers,
Personal vision, organizational vision and Malawi vision: Learning from the 2025 General Elections in Malawi.
Malawians decided on 16 September 2025 on who should govern them for the next five years. Political governance determines the future of the country. However, this political governance has two faces which we need to examine in this process and seriously reflect on. A critical reflection should be around our personal visions as they relate organizational and national vision and mission.
Do our leaders’ vision relate to Malawi 2063? The Tonse government and indeed our mighty MCP should ask a fundamental question as to where they lost the people’s confidence. It should be noted that in 2019 DPP won the election that was annulled by the courts and in 2020 fresh elections, DPP got the same 38% of the votes. However, during the time, opposition with support from civil society organizations pushed for the fresh election with lots of demonstrations. Sadly, the processes of demonstrators were limited in the period between 2020 and 2025.
Despite serious economic challenges, high levels of corruption and poor governance, civil society became a sleeping watchdog. We saw long fuel queues that were endless, and one wonders what the issue was. We also saw men with machetes getting on the street taking over police to fight those who had gathered courage to demonstrate. In Mangochi, on 10 December 2024, the issue of shrinking space was asked to Dr. Michael Usi was the state vice president and he demanded that we go to his office and tell him more about this.
Interestingly, during the campaign period, the same issues were being raised. So, the issues of why DPP was voted into power borders on poor governance and threats. What was more eminent is failure by our politicians to tell the leaders the truth about the situation. We moved people from various vehicles in lorries and gave them shirts to show to the president and we knew we were lying. Leaders need to realize that there are many reasons people want to be close to the leader. While others want to serve with you, the majority are greedy followers because they want the benefits. Every leader should be aware of this and must open their eyes to see and read to hear at all levels. People who surround leaders tend to be greedy and blind the leaders.
As DPP gets into power, remember you have a mission to accomplish, and this is about developing the people of Malawi. We have already started seeing the same behavior we saw last time which sent you to opposition. You need to guard against them. You need to focus on the needs of the people that voted for you
Wishing you a successful October
