YONECO Machinga District Office conducted a Mental Health and Suicide Prevention awareness session at Luntha Private Secondary School, equipping students with knowledge and practical skills to manage their mental well-being.

The session focused on helping learners understand the importance of taking care of their mental health and adopting healthy coping mechanisms when faced with challenges. During the discussions, students identified academic pressure, relationship issues, substance abuse, poverty, and the loss of loved ones as some of the main causes of mental health struggles among young people.

Facilitators encouraged the students to speak up and seek support whenever they feel overwhelmed. They were also introduced to available support systems, including YONECO’s Youth Drop-In Centre (DIC) and the Tithandizane toll-free helplines, where they can access counseling and guidance services.

“Sometimes we don’t realize how much stress we carry until it becomes too heavy,” “This session has reminded me that it’s okay to talk to someone and ask for help when things feel difficult,” said Grace Mtima, a Form Four student.
