YONECO has launched a series of intensive behaviour change sessions at Namilango Primary School in, Machinjiri, Blantyre in a bid to delinquent behaviours among leaners and to restore peaceful learning environment.

The first two sessions were held on 13 and 14 November 2025. For some time, the school has been struggling with serious behavioural challenges, including gang recruitment, substance abuse, robberies and cases of sexual misconduct and other issues that have spilled over into the neighbouring communities.

Despite previous disciplinary interventions some of which involving the police, the situation has persisted. On the day the sessions began, school authorities reported that a learner had stolen money from the headteacher’s office. The money was meant to support the process of administering examinations.

In response, YONECO has organized a comprehensive behaviour change programme focusing on peer pressure management, conflict resolution, the dangers of drug use, and the importance of education. The programme further has other topical areas aimed at building self-esteem, helping learners to make informed decisions and taking responsibility for their actions.

The intervention has also involved collaborations with local police and youth groups to counter the gang-related activities and deter delinquent behaviours.

“We are taking important steps toward restoring discipline and safeguarding the future of the leaners by tackling the root causes and engaging them directly,” explained YONECO’s Victor Majola.

YONECO has scheduled a series of follow up activities including mentorship activities and increased parental engagement to ensure long-term impact.
