On 10 December, YONECO joined government officials, civil society organizations and community members at Chipopoma Ground in Nkhata Bay for the National Human Rights Day commemoration.
Held under the theme “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials,” the event highlighted the need to protect basic rights, including access to clean water, education, healthcare and freedom of expression.
YONECO showcased its work in child protection, prevention of violence, promotion of good governance and civic engagement as well as youth and gender empowerment. YONECO also promoted the toll-free helplines which the organization operates under the Tithandizane Helpline Services namely: 600 for GBV cases, 116 for child protection issues and 393 for the youth.
During the event, YONECO staff engaged communities through exhibitions and dialogue, stressing the importance of safeguarding the rights of all vulnerable groups and strengthening community protection structures.
The Second Vice President, Enock Chihana, who presided over the ceremony, called on Malawians to take responsibility in defending their rights and those of others, noting that human dignity begins at family and community level.
