YONECO led a mental health awareness session with women from Savings and Loans Groups (#SLGs) established under the Social Protection for Gender Empowerment and Resilience (SP-GEAR) Project in Chikwawa.
The session aimed to ensure that the financial empowerment of women is properly supported by psychological well-being.
To deepen the discussion, the session was co-facilitated by Community Gender Champions, who engaged participants on how Gender-Based Violence (#GBV) causes mental health problems.
Domestic violence, discrimination, and harmful social norms undermine women’s confidence, increase stress, and limit their ability to fully participate in savings and investment activities. By tackling these issues openly, the session provided coping strategies and peer support while also strengthening awareness of rights and protection services.
This integration of mental health and discussions on gender-based abuse ensured that the empowerment goals of the SP-GEAR project namely enhancing resilience, promoting gender equality, and building stronger communities, were addressed holistically, enabling women to thrive both financially and emotionally.
