Cholera remains a serious public health threat, especially during the rainy season when poor sanitation and hygiene practices increase the risk of outbreaks.
In response, YONECO, an organization working to promote the health and rights of children and young people, has conducted awareness sessions aimed at educating learners on how to prevent hygiene-related diseases, including cholera.
The awareness meeting took place on 14 January 2026 at Zomba C.C.A.P Primary School, where YONECO engaged pupils in discussions on good hygiene practices, safe food handling, and the importance of handwashing to protect their health.
During the session, learners openly admitted that they sometimes neglect proper hygiene practices in their daily lives. One learner shared a candid reflection, saying, “Most of the time we just wake up, pick mangoes, and eat them without washing. Thank you for reminding us.”
YONECO emphasized that simple behaviors such as washing hands with soap, cleaning fruits before eating, and maintaining a clean environment can significantly reduce the risk of cholera and other preventable diseases.
YONECO has scheduled more sessions that have been organized in [partnership with schools and communities to promote health education among children, particularly during high-risk periods such as the rainy season.
