Kawale Primary School in Chitipa District recently hosted a personal development skills awareness session that engaged 715 learners, comprising 312 boys and 403 girls, through fun and highly interactive activities aimed at strengthening learners’ confidence and decision-making abilities.

The session focused on key competencies such as effective communication, problem-solving, and goal setting, equipping learners with practical tools to navigate both academic and personal challenges. Through group discussions, role-plays, and participatory exercises, learners were encouraged to actively share ideas and learn from one another.

“We had an amazing time learning how to express ourselves, work in teams, and manage our time,” said one of the learners who participated in the session.

The programme was facilitated by officers from YONECO, who highlighted the importance of nurturing essential personal development skills at an early age to support learners’ holistic growth and future success. The facilitators also shared YONECO’s toll-free number, 116, encouraging learners to seek support whenever they face challenges requiring guidance or counselling.

The interactive nature of the session sparked lively discussions and role-plays, enabling learners to better understand values such as empathy, leadership, and resilience. Another learner noted the importance of listening skills, saying, “I learned that being a good listener is just as important as speaking up.”

The school administration welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. Officials noted that such programmes have the potential to improve learners’ academic performance while also supporting their personal growth.
