YONECO ICT Department engaged students at Zomba Islamic High School as part of the section’s ongoing Girls Innovative Research and Learning (GIRL) Programme aimed at stimulating the interest of girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

During the session, that was held from 20 to 22 January 2025, students were introduced to basic programming concepts using Scratch, a beginner-friendly, drag-and-drop coding platform that allows learners to create programmes visually while understanding core logic and problem-solving principles.

Through the guided, hands-on sessions, the girls actively engaged in building simple programmes, exploring how coding works, and gaining confidence in using technology beyond basic computer use. The session was highly interactive and demonstrated the girls’ curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm for learning new digital skills.

“This engagement has been helpful as it has given as an early exposure to technology and hopeful it will go a long way in help us to shape future innovators,” explained one of the female students who participated in the sessions.

YONECO through its Y-Hub has scheduled more sessions in various secondary and primary schools in a bid to empowering young girls with practical digital skills, nurturing innovation, and opening pathways for their participation in STEM fields.
