YONECO, in partnership with the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and the District Social Welfare Office, has launched a child protection operation in Chitipa aimed at safeguarding children from abuse and exploitation.
The exercise is targeting known hotspots where children are often exposed to unsafe environments, including the streets and other high-risk areas. The initiative seeks to identify vulnerable children, provide immediate support and connect them to appropriate protection services.
So far, 11 children have been rescued and are receiving counselling and psychosocial support. Some have already been safely reunited with their families.
In addition, parents and caregivers are being engaged through awareness and guidance sessions to strengthen family care and prevent children from returning to the streets.
“This operation is a crucial step toward creating safer communities and ensuring children grow up in secure and supportive environments,” explained Dennis Luhanga – Field Officer, YONECO.
