YONECO and other partners in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)-funded project titled Climate Adaptation and Resilience for Communities have been trained as Trainers for the Participatory Approach for Safe Shelter Awareness (PASSA).

The training, organised in Chikwawa district by Self Help Africa (SHA) and facilitated by the Red Cross Society, aimed at equipping participants to support communities in identifying shelter risks, planning safe solutions, and strengthening resilience, with methods cascaded through Disaster Risk Management Committees.

Speaking on behalf of all participant organisations, Edson Ndalama from Care Malawi expressed gratitude for the skills acquired, which he said will be cascaded to the communities.

In his remarks, Donald Ghambi, Chairperson of the Civil Society Organisations (CSO) Network in Chikwawa, stated that it was an honour for the training to be held in Chikwawa and expressed his belief that shelter and settlement conditions would improve in the district, thereby reducing the impact of hazards like floods and cyclones.

“As most of you are aware, Chikwawa district has faced a number of cyclones that have impacted people’s settlements. We believe that through the implementation of the skills acquired from this training, communities will have strong structures that can withstand the impact of these cyclones,” he said.

The Climate Adaptation and Resilience for Communities project is being implemented in Malawi by a consortium of six partners: Self Help Africa (SHA), Care Malawi, CADECOM, Eagles Relief, Concern Worldwide, and YONECO.
