Today, YONECO participated in the launch of the much-anticipated 2025/2026 District Forestry Season at a function that was held at Nyamithuthu in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Tengani in Nsanje.
Nyamithuthu was designated as a temporary refugee camp following political unrest over the contested 2025 General Elections in Mozambique. As a result, the area lost close to 8 hectares of forest that was cleared to make way for the camp, as well as for firewood and construction materials for the refugees.
According to the Nsanje District Council, launching this year’s Forestry Season in this area will help replenish the depleted trees and create communal assets necessary for poverty reduction.
At the function, community members were encouraged to plant more trees, including fruit trees, targeting 10 trees per household.
The function brought together community members, traditional leaders, district council officials, and representatives from various Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), among others.
The annual forestry seasons are organized to promote the restoration of forest cover and enhance environmental sustainability in response to rapid deforestation and climate-related challenges affecting Malawi and the entire globe.
