As part of its ongoing journey to promote mental healing through performing arts, YONECO recently visited Magwira Community-Based Organization (CBO) in Zomba, where 91 displaced individuals, including children, are currently seeking shelter following heavy rains that occurred between 15th and 18th March 2026.
During the visit, the YONECO Cultural Troupe delivered a theatre-based psychosocial support session aimed at fostering emotional healing and resilience among the survivors. Through interactive performances, storytelling, and sports activities, participants were offered a safe and supportive environment to express their experiences, reduce stress, and rebuild a sense of community.
The initiative focused on improving emotional well-being and helping individuals cope with the trauma brought about by the disaster. Children, in particular, showed remarkable progress as they gradually rediscovered joy, becoming more expressive, engaged, and active during games and recreational activities.
This intervention highlights the critical role of creative arts in disaster response, especially in addressing the often-overlooked mental health needs of affected communities.
