Community-based groups from Makawa in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mponda in Mnagiochi district have called for stronger action to address Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and within fishing communities.
Speaking during a meeting that was organized by YONECO on 8 May 2026, participants expressed concern over continued cases of abuse, including reports of women and girls being forced to exchange sexual favours for access to fish.
The community-based groups indicate that the practice has contributed to rising cases of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), unintended pregnancies, and exploitation of vulnerable women and girls.
Community members also raised alarm over persistent child marriages in the area, accusing some traditional leaders of supporting underage marriages.
“Participants noted that child marriage has been among the key factors that increase cases of school dropouts, poverty and expose girls to various health complications,” explained Hilda Ndala from Makawa area.
The groups proposed intensified community awareness campaigns, promotion of peaceful family relations, and economic empowerment initiatives aimed at reducing household vulnerability and conflict. Traditional leaders were further urged to strengthen enforcement of child protection laws and support the promotion of human rights, and the welfare of women and children in the area.
