Nkhata Bay District Council led the launch of Executive Order No. 2 of 2026 on sanitation through a clean-up campaign and community engagement activities held on 15 May 2026 at Mpamba Market in the district.
The Executive Order issued by the President of the Republic of Malawi, Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, mandates the provision and maintenance of proper waste disposal and hygiene facilities in public places, schools, and workplaces. The Executive Order aims to prevent poor sanitation and hygiene-related infections.
The function began with a solidarity walk from Mpamba Puma Filling Station to Mpamba Market, which was followed by a market clean-up exercise.
The launch event was graced by the presence of the District Council Chairperson, who served as the Guest of Honour. Additionally, the event was attended by various stakeholders, including district council officials, corporate actors, civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and community members.
Speaking on behalf of Civil Society Organizations (CSO) in the district, the District Coordinator for YONECO, Michael Mwanachawa, urged communities to take ownership of sanitation initiatives by adhering to hygiene measures and maintaining clean environments.
“CSOs need to mainstream sanitation awareness in their day-to-day activities and community programmes,” explained Mwanachawa.
The event was held under the theme “Every Citizen Counts in Keeping Public Places Clean.”
