YONECO awarded James Chavula after being chosen as the best reporter in the promotion of Green and Inclusive Energy (GIE) by a panel of judges through the Association of Environmental Journalists in Malawi (AEJ).

Chavula was awarded the Energy and Green Economy Award at the 2019 Green Media Awards ceremony that was held 12 April at Lotus Hotel in Blantyre.

The Energy and Green Economy Category, which was initiated by YONECO, recognises outstanding media coverage that is focused on the advancement of the energy sector for Malawi’s socio-economic growth.

Chavula who works for Nations Publication Limited (NPL) won the award for his newspaper article titled, “Solar energy rekindles farmers’ hopes”. The story merged as the best after a review of about 60 entries from journalists across the country.

“Converting sunlight to energy, Mwalija Power Station is transforming lives of people around an 11.7-hectare Irrigation Scheme that was founded in 1996 by 72 people. This was a great story which went a distance further to establish how solar power can improve water, crop production and power supply in villages excluded from the grid,” Commented one of the judges, Chikumbutso Ndaferankhande.

Now in its third year, this year’s Green Media Awards Ceremony was sponsored by YONECO, Puma Energy, Egenco and UNDP among other partners.

YONECO sponsored the Energy and Green Economy category through the Go Green Project which is being funded by Hivos through the Green and Inclusive Energy-GIE Malawi consortium which comprises YONECO, Community Energy Malawi (CEM), Renew’N’Able Malawi (RENAMA), Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) and National Association of Business Women (NABW)

In his remarks, the Executive Director for YONECO, MacBain Mkandawire stated that sustainable energy is crucial for the growth and development of Malawi. Mkandawire further added that this is the reason why it is important to acknowledge the good work of those who write and promote it.

Chavula who went away with a state of the art HP laptop, a certificate and a trophy said that Climate and science reporting is important in ensuring that Malawi’s growth and development is truly Sustainable.

In his keynote address, the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Werani Chilenga commended all reporters who have interest and commitment towards the promotion of GIE in Malawi.

“This evening presents to us, the very best in Malawian Environmental Journalism. By entering these awards, they have proved they have the determination, professionalism and courage to showcase the country’s stories to the world. I, therefore, congratulate each and every one,” Said Chilenga
