Young people from Mchinji district have acclaimed the interventions of YONECO after realizing bumper harvests in Soya Bean and Ground Nuts cultivation.
YONECO, with funding from USAID through Feed the Future, is implementing a project called Agricultural Diversification which was designed to address issues of low incomes, dietary diversification and effects of climate change by improving access to better markets, agricultural productivity and resilience to climate change.
Among other things, YONECO has trained young people in various farming techniques, distribution of inoculant as well as linking young farmers to Agricultural Extension Workers. With such interventions, the targeted famers have recorded a high yield and they have also enjoyed technical support on the market.
One of the young famers, Gerald Simoko, stated that the total he got after selling his Soybean is MK 360,000. Gerald further added that ever since he started farming some 5 years ago, he has never realized such a huge sum of money and not even half of it.
“The project has greatly helped us a lot. Next year, I would like to extend my farm land so that I should earn more since I have now seen that it is possible to make a living out of farming,” said Gerald.
The project is also being implemented in Balaka, Machinga, Ntcheu, as well as Mchinji and it is registering similar successes.
