YONECO joined various partners and stakeholders in Mangochi district during a march against political violence ahead of the forthcoming Tripartite Elections that will be held in Malawi on 21 May, 2019.
Recently, Mangochi became the epicenter of political violence which has mainly been perpetrated against women in the district.
The march attracted various Civil Society Organizations, the business community, the Malawi Police Service, government departments as well as members and leaders of various political parties. The peaceful march started from St. Augustine 3 Primary School to the Office of the District Commissioner (DC).
The marchers carried placards while singing songs which preached against political violence, promoted women empowerment and tolerance among other key messages.
A representative of the Mangochi DC, Dominic Mwandira who is also the Director of Administration received the petition which the marchers carried. In his remarks, Mwandira commended the group for marching peacefully to the DC’s Offices.
“A number of political violence cases have been reported so far. I would like to assure you that as a District Council, we will not condone such malpractices,” said Mwandira.
The March, which is the first one of its kind in the district, attracted over 900 people.
