30 June, 2022, YONECO joined the nation in commemorating the Day of the African Child (DAC) at Nsondole Primary School in Zomba.
The function was spiced up by various edutainment presentations from children and youths reflecting upon the day’s theme. YONECO Cultural Troupe mesmerized the audience with a traditional dance known as Zimbabwe shimmering with a call to the citizenry to protect children from harmful practices.
Speaking during the event, the Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Dr. Patricia Kaliati who was also the guest of honor, urged all stakeholder to work hand in hand to ensure that every child is protected.
The Minister further called on parents and guardians to ensure that children are not married off at a tender age. Dr. Kaliati described child marriage as a menace that hinders many women from making notable progress.
The DAC is celebrated on 16 June annually to promote and raise awareness about children’s rights in Africa. This year’s DAC was observed under the theme, “Eliminating Harmful Practices Affecting Children: Progress on Policy and Practice since 2013.”
