On Tuesday, 5 May 2023, our office in Blantyre joined other stakeholders in the launch of cholera awareness and clean-up exercise which took place at Mdeka Trading Center in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Chigalu.
The aim of the launch was to sensitize and create awareness of the dangers of cholera and to educate the public on the importance of personal and environmental hygiene. This event was presided over by the Blantyre District Council. The launch event was attended by the youth, vendors, health authorities, as well as community and traditional leaders from around the district.
In his remarks, the District Commissioner for Blantyre, Alex Mdooko, urged the business community, as well as political and community leaders to invest in the provision of piped water in order to ensure that communities have access to clean water.
The event was held under the theme ‘Let’s join hands to end cholera in Blantyre district’.
Since the emergence of Cholera outbreak in March 2023, Blantyre district has registered more than 8000 cases with about 200 fatalities recorded. The ongoing cholera outbreak in the country was declared an emergency by the Malawi government on 5 December 2022.
In a bid to contain cholera, YONECO is being supported by Network for Empowered Aid Response (NEAR) in order to contribute towards prevention and response to the disease.
