Young people often find themselves navigating a complex web of moral dilemmas, peer pressure, and various challenges in their everyday lives. These issues can have a significant impact on their educational future and overall wellbeing. In response to the growing concerns in the district, YONECO took proactive steps to equip young learners with essential life skills.
On September 19, 2023, the YONECO team engaged with standard 6-8 learners at Jata Private Primary School to provide valuable orientation on life skills development. The session focused on critical topics such as self-awareness, self-esteem, and peer pressure, aiming to empower these students with the tools needed to make informed decisions and build a brighter future.
The life skills development session was conducted in a participatory manner, fostering active engagement among the learners. This approach encouraged students to become attentive, ask questions, and provide accurate answers when called upon. During the session, the learners candidly admitted to facing issues related to peer pressure, which sometimes led to teenage pregnancies and involvement in drug and substance abuse. This honest discussion created a safe space for addressing these challenges.
One of the key messages conveyed to the students was the importance of self-confidence. They were encouraged to believe in themselves and their abilities, enabling them to resist negative influences and make choices aligned with their educational goals. The team emphasized the significance of saying no to peer pressure and provided strategies to resist negative peer influence, empowering them to make choices that prioritize their education and well-being.
At the end of the session, learners were asked to reflect on what they had learned. Their responses
demonstrated a clear understanding of the key concepts discussed during the orientation. The school’s
management, including the deputy head teacher, expressed their appreciation for the YONECO team’s efforts and encouraged future visits. Contact details were exchanged to facilitate ongoing communication and collaboration.
