In Malawi, women face numerous challenges that limit their involvement in peacebuilding and humanitarian work. Recognizing this gap, YONECO has launched a project in Phalombe dedicated to empowering women and strengthening their roles in these essential areas.
This initiative aligns with global frameworks like the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, which advocates for women’s participation in peace processes.
The project’s primary aim is to enhance women’s participation in conflict prevention and humanitarian response efforts. By creating an environment where women can meaningfully contribute to decision-making, the project seeks to build sustainable peace within communities.
On November 5, 2024, YONECO officers with District Gender officer and Youth Officer began identifying women and girl leaders who will be trained as facilitators in areas including sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) prevention and response, leadership, peacebuilding, humanitarian response, and economic empowerment.
This training aims to equip women with the skills to address vulnerabilities, improve their quality of life, and secure greater representation in decision-making processes that impact them directly.
During this initial phase, YONECO officers also paid courtesy visits to Traditional Authorities (T/As) Nkumba and Kaduya, as the project will be implemented in their jurisdictions. Their involvement underscores the importance of local support and collaboration for successful project outcomes.
Through advocacy, capacity building, and community engagement, YONECO aims to create a more inclusive environment where women’s contributions are acknowledged and valued.
The project is being implemented by YONECO with funding from the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) in partnership with UN Women.
