Learners at Kapenda Primary School in Chitipa district have expressed their appreciation to the Building Education Foundations through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT), which they have commended for promoting hygiene and student welfare while improving academic outcomes.

Mercy Banda, Standard 4 learner: “Before BeFIT, we used to sit on the floor during lessons, which was uncomfortable and unhygienic. But now, we have mats to sit on, and they are comfortable!”

Julius Lwesha, Standard 4 learner: “We are no longer distracted by the hard floor or worried about getting our uniforms dirty as we now have to sit on. We are now able to concentrate on our lessons and learn comfortably using tablets.”

Heston Kapenda, Standard 3 leaner: “We have learnt the importance of washing our hands regularly, especially before eating and after using the toilet. It has now become a habit for us.”

Julius, Standard 3 learner: “We’re grateful for the hand-washing facilities. They are helping us to prevent diseases that are caused by poor hygiene.”

The Building Education Foundations Through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT) is a government of Malawi-led program enhancing literacy and numeracy skills for learners in standard 1-4 across all public primary schools through supplemental, individualized, self-paced instruction through an Android tablet-based app.
