#YONECO and NGO Gender Coordination Network – Malawi held an engagement meeting with political leaders in Machemba Constituency, Phalombe, aimed at promoting women’s representation in leadership positions ahead of the September 16 General Elections (GE).

The meeting urged the leaders to rally behind capable female candidates in the upcoming primary elections and further support their bid for positions in the GE.

In his remarks, Traditional Authority (TA) Namasoko and other stakeholders highlighted the potential which women have hinted on the need to focus on merit over gender.

YONECO also stressed the right to political participation for all people and condemned gender-based abuse and discrimination in political circles.

The participants were encouraged to call YONECO’s Tithandizane toll-free helplines to report any form of intimidation which aspirant women leaders face.

This activity was conducted with financial support from UN Women whereby NGO-GCN is implementing a project aimed at enhancing women representation in politics while #YONECO is implementing a project aimed at enhancing women participation in leadership and conflict resolution.

In total, the meeting comprised of about 150 participants
