Malawi is today hosting the continental commemoration of the Day of the African Child at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
This year’s event is being held under the theme: “Planning and Budgeting for Children’s Rights: Progress Since 2010.”
The high-level gathering has brought together over 800 children and various stakeholders from across Africa, including government officials, child rights advocates, development partners, and civil society organizations.
The Day of the African Child, observed annually on 16th June, is a moment to raise awareness about the ongoing challenges faced by children across the continent.
The commemoration was first established by the African Union in 1991 in memory of the Soweto Uprising of June 16, 1976, when thousands of Black South African students took to the streets to protest against the inferior quality of education under the apartheid regime.
This year’s event in Lilongwe is being graced by Malawi’s Vice President, Dr. Michael Biswick Usi.
