YONECO reached out to bicycle taxi operators in Machinga district with information on Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH).
The initiative follows the gap on SRH information that was observed among the bicycle taxi operators. The lack of information about SRH exposes them to a number of hazards including Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
During the sessions, it was pointed out that the operators were at risk because many women would offer unprotected sex in exchange of payment for the transport service.
“Most of the times we do have unprotected sex as some female customers offer us sex instead of giving us money,” explained Matemba, one of the operators.
Weeks later after the session was conducted, there has been an improvement as the operators who were initially reached, are able to champion issues of SRH and have managed to reach out to other operators as well.
Jahson Jangiya, one of the operators said he feels duty bound to ensure that his colleagues are also aware of various SRH issues.
