YONECO in collaboration with District Community Development Office facilitated the establishment of Savings and Loans Groups (SLGs) for beneficiaries of Social Cash Transfer Programme (#SCTP) in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mnthilamanja in Mulanje.

The initiative aims to enhance the impact of the SCTP by promoting financial independence and self-reliance among the targeted community members. Many beneficiaries of the programme have limited access to formal financial services hence the need for local savings and lending groups.

“The Village Savings and Loans (VSL) groups will encourage us to regularly save and have access to soft loans to invest in small-scale businesses,” explained one of the community members, Janet Chiwaya.

The activity was conducted under the Social Protection Gender Empowerment and Resilience (#SPGEAR) Project which is being implemented by the Malawi government with funding from UNICEF. YONECO and other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are providing tailored support to the implementation of the project.

The #SPGEAR project is being implemented to reduce vulnerability and enhance resilience among women, girls, and marginalized groups in the targeted districts.
