The Senior Programmes Manager for Simavi which is funding a project a called Marriage No child’s Play visited the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Zulu in Mchinji where she appreciated a number of innovative interventions that are being used in the fights against child marriage.
During the visit, the team visited a number of economic empowerment activities that are aimed at fighting poverty which is also attributed to increased incidences of child marriage. Among other things, girls are being trained in financial management, cookery and a number of Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) to enable girls to save and invest.
One of the girls who attended a financial literacy training under the project impressed the team when she showcased how she has managed to venture to agribusiness. The girl has cultivated groundnuts and she is hopeful that she will have a bumper yield that will help her to meet her needs.
Implementation of Marriage No Child’s Play project commenced in 2016 and is expected to phase-out in 2020. The project is being implemented in Mangochi, Mchinji and Nkhata Bay under the More than Brides Alliance (MTBA) – Malawi which also comprise of the following organizations; Save the Children, and GENET.
