The street is no place for a child to live in. Children who are connected to the streets face a lot of challenges and they are exposed to a number of hazards and abuses. Heartrendingly, many small towns and major cities of Malawi have become homes to thousands of children.
On 18 August, 2022, YONECO in partnership with the Malawi Police Service and the Department of Social Welfare Services withdrew 28 children from the streets around Nsanje Boma. Out of the total, four children were from Mozambique.
During the exercise, two men and a woman were nabbed by the police for alleged child labour and exploitation.
According to an assessment that was conducted after the exercise, most of the children decided to call the streets their home due to orphanhood, poverty and parental neglect.
Currently, all the children have been repatriated back to their homes.
