Mchinji Police Station has awarded a certificate of recognition to YONECO for its untiring efforts towards the protection of youth, women and children in the district.
In his remarks, YONECO District Manager for Mchinji, Hughes Munthali, said the development is a result of commitment and various innovative interventions which YONECO implements to protect the vulnerable groups from abuse.
“This is indeed a great honour to the organization and I believe that this will further act as a stimulant to my team to do even more,” Munthali said.
The award also comes at a time when YONECO successfully facilitated the arrest and conviction of a 72-year-old man who defiled a girl in the district. The court sentenced the man to 8 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL).
Munthali further applauded community members for gaining confidence to report abuse cases, which he said has led to a decrease in the vice.
“It is very pleasing to learn that communities and our partners have confidence in us and this drives us to really work hard. The communities are also playing great role by reporting cases of abuse,” Munthali said.
In her remarks, the Guest of Honour to the Award Ceremony, the District Commissioner for Mchinji, Rosemary Nawasha commended YONECO for its diligence in fulfilling its mandate of complementing government’s efforts of promoting the rights and welfare of all people in the country.
