The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) called on the public and stakeholders to take a leading role in the fight against cyber bullying and promote safe use of the internet.

This has been said during the commemoration of this year’s Safer Internet Day (SIT) which was held at Mount Soche in Blantyre, where it was highlighted that many children in the country are experiencing cyberspace abuses but they are hardly reported.

In her remarks, MACRA’s Deputy Director for Legal and Consumer Rights Affairs, Thokozani Chimbe, stated that the regulatory body realizes the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in ensuring a well-informed nation in the fight against online child exploitation.

“The issue of protecting children from online violence needs, multisectoral approach for effective results, it cannot be achieved by an individual or one organization”, she said.

Chimbe added: “Stakeholders who are key in child protection need to work together and complement each other’s efforts”.
