As a way of promoting youth participation in environmental conservation, YONECO has been assisting various youth clubs across the country to mainstream issues of climate change in their activities.
Among others, Zotheka Youth Club, with support from YONECO, is now actively supporting afforestation activities in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Chowe in Mangochi district. The Youth Club has a tree nursery which is being used to supply primary schools in the area with seedlings for transplanting.
The tree seedlings have seen a number of primary schools establishing woodlots within their premises. The group intends to replicate this at village level as well.
Further to this, Zotheka Youth Club is also using the tree nursery initiative as an Income Generating Activity (IGA) whereby some seedlings are sold to community members and corporate institutions.
The proceedings from the IGA are channeled into the club’s activities which mainly focus on education, prevention of drug and substance abuse as well as promoting Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (ASRHR).
