On 8 March 2023, Malawi joined the rest of the world in commemorating this years International Womens Day (#IWD) at a function held at Malika School Ground in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Malemia in Zomba district.

The event was graced by the presence of the Minister of Mining, Honorable Monica Chang’anamuno, who was also the Guest of Honour. In her address, the Minister encouraged women and girls to utilize YONECO’s Tithandizane toll-free Helpline Services to report cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV). The Minister also spoke highly of the digital world and the various socioeconomic benefits it has to offer to women and girls.

The function was attended by heads of various government departments, leaders of various Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), traditional leaders, and Members of Parliament among others.

YONECO Cultural Troupe and other community artists spiced up the event with plays, as well as traditional songs and dances that added to the celebratory ambiance of the event.

International Women’s Day is globally commemorated on 8 March every year to celebrate the various social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This day is also commemorated to bring attention to the issues that negatively impact women’s rights and welfare. The 2021 theme was ‘DigitALL; Innovation and technology for gender equality’.
