Malawi’s literacy rate is the forth is the SADC region and the level is even lower among women who live in rural parts of the country.  Thus, in an effort to ensure that women are fully participating in economic activities, YONECO has been introducing adult literacy programmes.

This year, YONECO has established an additional adult literacy centre in Balaka district. Currently, the centre has enrolled a total of 22 women who are expected to gain literacy and numeracy skills.

“These classes will help me to properly calculate profits and manage my business better. Further to this, my children will also be motivated to work hard in school and shortly, I will be able to check their academic performance.” said Mercy Dzimbiri, one of the participants.
