On 7 February 2023, YONECO held a hygiene and sanitation session with vendors at Blantyre Market. The session was part of YONECO’s efforts to promote hygiene and sanitation among the local community in the wake of Cholera outbreak which has claimed over 850 lives since it was first detected in March, 2022.

Vendors who sell food stuffs have been further requested to observe all cholera preventive measures as they prepare and serve their customers. YONECO social workers also urged participants to get cholera vaccines in order to protect themselves as well as help in containing its further spread.

Malawi is currently experiencing one of the worst cholera outbreaks in history. So far, about 27,000 people have been infected and the situation calls for concerted efforts to prevent any further spread of the disease.
