Mangochi is one of the districts in the southern part of Malawi that has been greatly affected by the impact of Cyclone Freddy it has claimed a lot of lives and loss of property. A number of evacuation camps have been established to accommodate thousands of people who have lost their homes.

On 16th March 2023, our team in Mangochi visited four camps that have been established in the areas of Traditional Authority (T/A) Mponda and Bwananyambi in the district. Our team meanly focused on providing Psychosocial Support (PSS) services to the youth, women and children who have been affected by the disaster.

During the sessions it was noted that there is need for more food, beddings, clothes and sanitary materials. In addition to this, YONECO has urged parents, guardians and community leaders to ensure that children are being protected from violence and abuse.

Further to this, YONECO also raised awareness of various reporting mechanisms including its toll-free lines for Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Child Protection.

176 people attended the session of which 132 were females and 44 were males.
