On 22 April 2025, YONECO received a special recognition for promoting the rights of street-connected children at the commemoration event for this year’s International Day for Street Connected Children that was held at the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
YONECO has been acknowledged as an organization that employs a systematic approach to ensure that street-connected children are mentored and developed into responsible citizens of Malawi.
Among other interventions, YONECO has been recognized for establishing safe spaces for survivors of child abuse, managing Youth Drop-in Centres (DIC), operating toll-free helpline services, and engaging in media advocacy through its YFM Radio Station.
The Executive Director of YONECO, MacBain Mkandawire, received the award at the event presided over by the First Lady, Her Excellency Madam Monica Chakwera, who also hosted a luncheon attended by at least 200 street-connected children.
