YONECO Programmes team had an engagement session with Investigative Justice Mission (IJM) at its Head Office in Zomba. The two parties mainly zeroed in on Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and Trafficking in Persons (TIP) which is one of the gloss human rights violations that are still prevalent in Malawi.

Before the discussions, the delegation toured YONECO Youth Development Complex where the institution is headquartered and it also houses the call centre for Tithandizane Helpline Services and YONECO FM Radio station (YFM).

In the discussion, it was agreed that there is need to strengthen various systems in the process of adding weight to the efforts that are aimed at addressing the problem.

In his remarks, the Executive Director of YONECO, MacBain Mkandawire, bemoaned the existence of various unwarranted hiccups in prosecution of TIP cases in Malawi.

“As we are discussing these issues, there are a number of TIP cases that have stalled in the courts for over two years,” explained Mkandawire.

The delegation from IJM comprised of Wycliffe Abwao – Regional Security Officer, Harriet Mwendwa – Investigator and Yamikani Kalizang’oma who is the institution’s national consultant.
