On 28 November, 2022, the Director of Agriculture Planning Services in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Rodwel Mzonde, officially launched Sustainable Land Management (SAMALA) Project at Luwerezi in Mzimba district.

The five-year project will be implemented by Total Landcare, YONECO and World Agroforestry Centre with support from the Government of Flanders and Irish Aid.

The project will be implemented in Mzimba, Kasungu and Ntchisi with the aim of complementing the efforts of the Malawi government towards addressing issues of land degradation in the targeted areas.

Among other things, SAMALA Project will focus on watershed management, promoting conservation agriculture, Agroforestly, natural regeneration and tree planting, co-management of protected areas, as well as capacity building of local communities, awareness and advocacy on sustainable land management.

The launch event was graced by the presence of Inkosi Mabulabo, the Irish Ambassador – His Excellency Seamus O’Grady and the Deputy General Representative of Flanders in Malawi – Dr. Sofie Geerts.
